An Essay is a piece of writing concentrated on a particular topic to show the writer’s turn of mind about the topic. Essay can be formal or informal, the former tackles serious topic while the latter doesn’t necessarily do.
Every Essay carries a message from the writer to the reader, until the message is completely passed, the writer is never pleased. It’s centralized on a particular idea explained in paragraphs.
There are about four main types of Essay, each of them is written differently. The only thing they have in common is that ; All Essays are written in the ‘Introduction – Body – conclusion’ format.
Types of Essay
Narrative : This is type of Essay tell a story with a particular reason for telling. Narrative essays can be about personal experiences and are written from a defined point of view.
Descriptive : From the name, you would be able to tell what it does. This type of Essay gives the description of something after thorough examination of the subject matter.
Expository : Expository essays compare, and discuss problems. Though, they have a bit of a storytelling element to them, they always explain some integral concept to the reader. As such, they inform, describe, and explain.
Argumentative : Here, the writer argues and tries to convince the reader to hold his/her position on something. The writer’s position will be backed up with evidence, including statistics or the opinion of experts.
How to Begin an Essay
Whichever the essay you are writing is, you are required to start it a better way that hooks the reader and make them want to read more. This part is the introduction part, make sure it contains the following :
Hook your reader : The first line of your introduction must be a hooker, something that holds the reader. Be it a question, a quote, a surprising statistic, or a bold statement emphasizing the relevance of the topic.
Provide background on your topic : This contains the content that makes the reader understand the topic, but do not provide too much details.
Present the thesis statement : In this part, you signal your position on the topic. It is usually one or two sentences long. This is where you will state the motion you are supporting if yours is an Argumentative essay.
If your introduction doesn’t contain these three, there’s a possibility that you are starting your essay wrongly. Reframe and maintain the guideline.
