Hard drive also known as hard disk, hard disk drive(HDD), and fixed disk is an electro-mechanical data storage devices that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage and one or more rigid rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material.

It was invented 65 year ago on 24th of December, 1954 by IBM team led by Rey Johnson. Its primary characteristics is its capacity and performance.

A hard drive is where the computer system stores data for a long time. It is usually installed internally in a computer attached directly to the disk controller of the computer’s mother board.

Data stored in the hard drive

1.Operating system
2.Installed software
3.User’s personal files

A hard drive is required for the installation of any programs or files you want to keep in your computer.

Components of hard drive

1.The hard actuator
2.Read/write actuator arm
3.Read/write head
4.Spindle
5.Platter
6.Disk controller

Hard drives are powered by a connection to the power supply unit.

Storage size of hard drive

1.Megabyte (Several hundred MB)
2.Gigabytes (Several GB)
3.Terabytes (Several TB)

Everything stored on a hard drive is measured in term of its file size.

Documents (text) are generally very small whereas pictures are large. Music is larger and videos are the largest.

Types of hard drive

1.Internal hard drive; This provides built-in-storage for all your files, it is located inside the computing device.

2.External hard drive; This gives portable, on-the-go storage at your fingertips, it is located outside the PC.

If your computer’s hard drive is damaged, you risk losing all your digital content. This is why most people back up their content on an external drive in addition to their computer’s internal drive.

Each hard drive has a specific amount of space. Some of that space is automatically consumed by the operating system and backup installations.

Classification of hard drive

1.Hard drive disks(HDDs); This uses a spinning magnetic disks that holds information inscribed in very tiny tracks abit like a record player. This requires moving parts, specifically head to read and write data to the disk as needed. HDDs are inexpensive to purchase.

2.Solid-state drive(SSD); There are no moving parts in solid-state drives, instead they use semi-conductors that store information by changing the electrical state of very tiny capacitors. They are much faster than HDDs and can store information more easily.

Hard drive qualities

1.Speed
2.Physical security
3.Connections

How to remove hard disk

1.To reduce or eliminate electrical change, wear an anti-static worst strap.

2.Remove the side panel from the computer case.

3.Locate the hard drive inside the case.

4.Disconnect the power supply cable from the back of it.

5.Gently remove the hard drive.

If you remove a hard drive from your computer, the data will still be present on the hard drive. However, it will no longer be present in that computer.

Hard disk drive and hard drive are connected and mean the same thing. However the term “Hard drive” helps to distinguish it from an SSD (Solid-state drive) which contains no platters, disk-shaped components or moving parts.
