A duvet is a type of bedding consisting of a soft flat bag filled with down, feathers, wool, silk or synthetic alternative and typically protected with a removable cover analogous to a pillow and pillow case.
In Australian English, a duvet is also called a doona while in American English it is being reffered as a comforter.
It was coined from the french duvet meaning down; the first feathering of young birds.
The duvet set originated in Europe and was made from down feathers because of its usefullness as a thermal insulator. It is a single covering instead of a combination of sheets, blankets, quilts and other bed covering.
Duvet cover is a protective layer that slips over the duvet and has a closure.
It can also be refer as a more wooven covering that is sandwiched between a flat sheet and another layer primarily for warmth.
Luxury hotels use duvet with a little weight which makes them perfect for snuggling under.
